Fireplace rugs are used to give a decorative look to the hearth. They also prevent ash and sparks from coming out of the fireplace to move on to the carpet or floor of the room. They therefore carry on twin functions of enhancing the beauty of the room and preventing accidents. 

There are many types of fireplace rugs available in the market. Naturally, the first thing you want to look for is the material of the rug. The material should be fire resistant and should be able to withstand high temperatures.

These days’ fireplace rugs of different sizes, shapes and color combinations exist. You can get them at low rates online, or in the sale season. For safety purposes, it is best to use rugs that are made of fiberglass. This is because fiberglass easily survives burning and is resistant to melting. In addition, it is easily washable, though somewhat expensive.

Another material used is wool. Wool too does not melt away at extreme temperatures, but is can easily be spoiled if it catches fire. Any burn mark may be visible on it, but it is much cheaper than fiberglass.

Fireplace rugs can also be made up of nylon or polyester. These materials are the least expensive of all. The rugs made of nylon are better protected than other synthetic fibers. This is because nylon has a higher melting point than other artificial fibers.

The best thing about it is that while there may be a spot damage due to burning, it can prevent sparks from getting into the room. Synthetic ones too prevent damage to the room but are not as efficient. Nevertheless, if you are looking for the low cost variety, synthetic ones are the best.
